Declaring Income While You Are Receving Benefits

If you have income during your benefit period, you must declare it without delay!

If you have employment earnings or other income during your benefit period, you must declare it without delay!

The income could affect the amount of your benefits.

  • When you are receiving maternity benefits:
    • Each dollar earned is deducted from your benefit.

      Example 1
For the period from January 15 to May 24, 2012, you are eligible for $750 per week in maternity benefits (gross amount).

For the week from January 15 to January 21, 2012, you receive $100 in net business earningsor earnings that are insurable for the purposes of the QPIP as a family-type resource or an intermediate resource.

As each dollar earned is deducted from your maternity benefits, you will be issued a gross maternity benefit of $650 for the week from January 15 to 21, 2012 ($750 – $100).

  • When you are receiving paternity, parental or adoption benefits:
    • Each dollar earned over 25% of your gross weekly benefit is deducted from your benefit.

      Example 2
For the period from January 29 to March 17, 2012, you are eligible for $750 per week in parental benefits (gross amount).

For the week from March 4 to 10, 2012, you receive $300 in net business earnings or earnings that are insurable for the purposes of the QPIP as a family-type resource or an intermediate resource.

You will be issued a gross parental benefit of $637.50 for the week from March 4 to 10, 2012.

      It is calculated as follows:

      • $750 x 25% = $187.50 (earnings you are allowed without any deduction in your weekly parental benefit)
      • $300 – $187.50 = $112.50 (your earnings for the week, minus the earnings you are allowed without any deduction in your weekly parental benefit)
      • $750 – $112.50 = $637.50 (your weekly benefit, minus each dollar in earnings above $187.50, i.e., minus your earnings above 25% of your gross weekly benefit)
    • If your gross weekly benefit is less than $200, you have a right to up to $50 without any deduction from your benefit, but each dollar earned over $50 will be deducted from your benefit.

      Example 3
For the period from February 5 to March 10, 2012, you are eligible for $175 per week in parental benefits (gross amount).

For the week from February 19 to 25, 2012, you receive $45 in net business earnings or earnings that are insurable for the purposes of the QPIP as a family-type resource or an intermediate resource.

Your gross parental benefit for the week from February 19 to 25, 2012, will be unchanged at $175, as your earnings are less than $50 and your gross weekly benefit is less than $200.

      Example 4
For the period from January 22 to March 24, 2012, you are eligible for $175 per week in parental benefits (gross amount).

For the week from March 18 to 24, 2012, you receive $60 in net business earnings or earnings that are insurable for the purposes of the QPIP as a family-type resource or an intermediate resource.

Your gross parental benefit for the week from March 18 to 24, 2012, will be $165.

      It is calculated as follows:

      • $60 – $50 = $10 (your earnings for the week, minus $50, i.e., minus the earnings you are allowed without any deduction in your weekly parental benefit)
      • $175 – $10 = $165 (your weekly benefit, minus each dollar in earnings above $50)

Income that may affect your benefit amount includes:

  • Employment income such as the amounts paid for days off (including vacation pay, statutory holidays and sick days) and performance bonuses
  • Income replacement indemnities from the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec
  • Income replacement indemnities from the Commission des normes, de l’équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail.

To avoid having to reimburse any overpayments, be sure to declare your income without delay.

If you earn or receive income such as those listed above during your benefit period, it could be more advantageous for you to have your next benefit payment suspended. For information about this, please contact the Centre de service à la clientèle.
