Death of a child

If you are consulting this section following the death of a child, please accept our condolences. We know that this is a very difficult time for you and we will do everything in our power to facilitate the processing of your file.

Payment of certain benefits ends following the death of a child. If the death occurs while paternity, parental, welcome and support or adoption benefits are being paid, parents cease being eligible for the benefits as of the end of the second week after the week of the death.

Payment of maternity benefits is not affected by the death of a child. Maternity benefits are granted to mothers to help them recover following pregnancy and childbirth. However, if the mother has no weeks or just one week of benefits left, she could receive one or two weeks of parental benefits, depending on the situation.

For information about the benefits payable if there is a termination of pregnancy, consult the section Benefits When There is a Termination of Pregnancy.

Important

You must inform us of your child’s date of death as soon as possible so that we can update your file and make any necessary adjustments. Please contact the Centre de service à la clientèle for information about the processing of your file.
